Camphor Laurel was introduced to Australia in the early 1800’s as an ornamental shade tree and many large old specimens can still be seen in parks and reserves throughout Australia but particularly in the Eastern states. Another species of Camphor Laurel was introduced in the mid 1800’s and the hybrid cross that resulted is the rather straggly and thin, invasive tree that is rampant in Northern NSW and Queensland. Camphor Laurel invades habitats where land has been cleared, has a strong competitive advantage over native vegetation and is toxic to many native fauna. As a result it has been declared a noxious weed in many parts of NSW and Queensland by the departments of Primary Industry.

As handmade homeware woodworking converts, we wanted to explain the true value of handmade homeware woodworking and why we believe it is 100% worth the investment. Handmade homeware woodworking is dual purpose – you are really getting bang for your buck as they say! Not only is it a marvel on the eyes but it’s also functional and serves a purpose. Take a beautiful handmade ceramic jug, it can be used as a vase with stunning flowers to form a centrepiece on a dining table, or for your morning juice or if you’re feeling practical, to water your much-loved house plants. The same just doesn’t apply to mass-produced, because no matter how much you like it, an Ikea jug cannot be described as art!

Camphor Laurel was first introduced as a shade tree into Australia from Asia in the middle of the 19th century. It quickly adapted to the rich volcanic soils around Mullumbimby in the New South Wales North Coast, where the timber developed some of the most beautiful grains and colour ever seen. It has become a feral pest, but with the blessing of producing a much sought-after cabinet timber. As such, the harvest of Camphor Laurel trees for use in timber boards and other furniture plays an important part in managing the native forests in these regions.

Stonewood Collections aims to provide you with the same products as shown on the website. However all our products are different in colour, texture and grain as the timber taken is grown at different climates with different amounts of water and sun. Due to the different timber or stone used, colour, texture, tone and grain this is NOT possible, please ensure you carefully read the product description before purchasing. Also, colours displayed on your computer monitor, mobile phone or other electronic device may vary due to your selected colour settings. The shape and size are also slightly different as all boards and products are uniquely selected and handcrafted, so no two pieces will ever look exactly the same, each piece is unique and one of a kind. Our incredible woodworkers are incredibly talented at what they do, we are sure you will love your new product. See additional details at https://stonewoodcollections.com.au/.
